I know that Google covers housing for their employees who go through the program, but I still consider it “volunteering” because they’re still expected to do their engineering duties (or, at least they were when I was going through it). Not making someone pay double rent while being a full-time recruiter/engineer for them is probably the least Google could do, tbh. But they should be paying their engineers extra to do the program, and consider it actively beneficial to the company. Housing and relocation isn’t a perk if everyone has to move.

Either way, I hope your manager approves your request, and I hope you enjoy teaching while you’re there! Good luck on your endeavors into academia!
